No less than 64 individuals lost their lives in a security raid cracking down on the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the biggest and most lethal operation in the area's history.

Four security agents lost their lives during Operation Containment in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, government representatives stated. In excess of 80 suspects were taken into custody.

Intense confrontations commenced when about 2,500 police forces moved in on Tuesday morning. The Comando Vermelho responded with gunfire, burning barricades and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, authorities stated.

The International human rights organization said it was "appalled" by the police operation, calling for "immediate and thorough inquiries".

Mission Consequences

The area of favelas adjacent to the aerial transportation hub is considered to be the main base of among the nation's strongest organised crime groups.

State officials said at least 50 of the deceased were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Numerous individuals were hurt, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Local Reaction

Residents have compared the mountainous region - inhabited by approximately 300,000 people - to a "combat area" since the mission commenced.

Roads remain closed in the entire neighborhood.

Gang Growth

The Comando Vermelho organization have been expanding their influence in the area, growing illegal substance trade paths and power in the informal settlements.

Security forces said more than 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were captured in the operation, in addition to dozens of firearms.

Raid Preparation

The coordinated mission by various security forces comes after a year-long investigation.

Many of the individuals are believed to be participants in an organization from the northern region who are currently hiding in the metropolitan area.
