Three members of law enforcement were killed and at least 15 additional individuals were hurt in what appears to be intentional blast caused by gas at a rural property in the northern part of Italy.

Event Timeline

The explosion occurred as police and firefighters entered the residence close to the Verona region to execute an eviction order for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.

The three deceased individuals belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Arrests and Aftermath

One male and one female were taken into custody at the location and another man who escaped subsequent to the explosion was apprehended not long after. The trio have been taken to medical facility.

The blast could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and photographs from the scene showed the building turned into a mass of wreckage.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” said the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who added that efforts had been made to remove the three family members in the previous occasions.

Financial Context

The president of the Veneto region, President Zaia, explained the property was under an removal notice due to debts accumulated by the three owners.

Negotiators had been assigned to talk with the brothers and sister who had locked themselves into the property. When the officers came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think one of the residents triggered the detonation.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander Claudio Papagno informed news outlets.

A gas canister had been ignited, and the blast immediately struck our personnel,” he explained.

Petrol bombs were also found at the property, the minister stated.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the blast consisted of an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as three officers of Italy's state police and a firefighter.

Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.

The official was convinced the explosion had occurred on a story above the doorway and stated to journalists it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Just prior to the blast, he revealed officers had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the gas cylinders being opened”.

Community Reaction

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” local residents told Italian media, mentioning that the trio had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto joined other elected representatives in honoring the three men who had lost their lives in the service of their country.
